To a major extent its study has been dominated by social factors. Free to download , the life-size model was designed by the French engineer, sociologist, and independent researcher Odile Fillod and released early last year. Historical accounts of the clitoris are plagued by disparagement or ignorance.
The clitoris is a small projection of erectile tissue in the vulva of the female reproductive system. It contains thousands of nerve endings that make it an extremely sensitive organ. Touch stimulation of the nerve endings in the clitoris produces sensations of sexual pleasure. The clitoris is structurally and functionally homologous to the penis of the male reproductive system, except that the clitoris does not contain the urethra and plays no role in urination. The clitoris is located within the vulva at the anterior intersection of the labia minora.
Clitoral Anatomy, Physiology and Pathology Demystified by Imaging
Published in Clinical anatomy Vincenzo Puppo. Skip to search form Skip to main content. The clitoris is the homologue of the male's glans and corpora cavernosa, and erection is reached in three phases: latent, turgid, and rigid.
In humans, the visible portion - the glans - is at the front junction of the labia minora inner lips , above the opening of the urethra. Unlike the penis , the male homologue equivalent to the clitoris, it usually does not contain the distal portion or opening of the urethra and is therefore not used for urination. The clitoris also usually lacks a reproductive function. While few animals urinate through the clitoris or use it reproductively, the spotted hyena , which has an especially large clitoris, urinates, mates, and gives birth via the organ.
