Canadian scientists tested the sensitivities of several sexual areas on the female body, including the parts in the perineum area—the area between the anus and vulva—as well as the side boob and nipple. They compared these to neutral areas on the body, like the neck, forearm, abdomen. Exactly how did they go about this? The researchers used light touch, pressure, and yes, vibration to assess how sensitive these body parts were. They had 3o healthy women between the ages of 18 and 35 get undressed and lie on a table covered in a bed sheet.

In pornography, anal sex is commonly portrayed as a desirable, painless routine that does not require personal lubricant ; this can result in couples performing anal sex without care, and men and women believing that it is unusual for women, as receptive partners, to find discomfort or pain instead of pleasure from the activity. Researchers say adequate application of a personal lubricant, relaxation, and communication between sexual partners are crucial to avoid pain or damage to the anus or rectum. The review suggests that anal sex is exotic among the sexual practices of some heterosexuals and that "for a certain number of heterosexuals, anal intercourse is pleasurable, exciting, and perhaps considered more intimate than vaginal sex".

There were no significant correlations between baseline rectal volume and the pressure at discomfort threshold. Compared with healthy volunteers they were hypersensitive in their rectum as far as volume thresholds were concerned, but the pressure was normal at the discomfort threshold. When these IBS patients were subtyped by predominant bowel pattern, the volume discomfort threshold was reduced in patients with diarrhoea predominant symptoms while it was unchanged in those with alternating stool habits. Discrepancy between pressure and volume thresholds has been described earlier [ 20 , 27 ], and it has been demonstrated that after prolonged isobaric distension, the volume increased but the perception did not [ 28 ].
